Seiko

Seiko makes its own movements, its own hairsprings and its own luminous compound, and it does so across a range that runs from a $150 automatic to Grand Seiko. No other brand covers that span in-house.

Seiko's affordable output is organised into three lines that matter here. 5 Sports is the entry point: mechanical watches built around the 4R family, priced against quartz competitors. Prospex covers sport and dive watches, including ISO 6425 certified divers. Presage is the dress line, and the range where Seiko's dial-making shows most clearly. The common thread is that Seiko builds the movement, which is why a $195 Seiko has a hacking automatic when competitors at the price use bought-in calibers or quartz.

Puntos fuertes

  • In-house movements at every price point, with parts availability measured in decades
  • LumiBrite, widely regarded as the strongest luminous compound in the affordable segment
  • ISO 6425 certification on Prospex divers, which most rivals do not carry
  • The largest aftermarket parts ecosystem of any watch brand

Ojo con

  • Persistent use of Hardlex mineral glass on watches where rivals fit sapphire
  • Bracelets with folded end links and stamped clasps well into the $400 range
  • The widest published accuracy window of any movement family here (-35 to +45 s/day)
  • Reference numbering is opaque and varies by region
