Veredicto rápido
Seiko placed a mechanical GMT into a $425 watch and the rest of the industry has yet to answer at that price. It is a caller GMT rather than a flyer, which matters if you change time zones frequently, but for tracking a second zone from home it is functionally complete.

Diseño
The SSK001 reuses the SRPD case and adds a fixed 24-hour bezel insert split into day and night halves. The GMT hand is narrow with a lollipop tip so it stays legible without competing with the main handset. In grey and black the two-tone insert is subtle; the blue-and-red SSK003 is considerably louder.
Movimiento
The 4R34 adds a fourth hand geared to 24 hours to the familiar 4R base: 24 jewels, 21,600 vph, hacking, hand-winding, 41 hours. The GMT hand is set independently through the crown. The local hour hand cannot be advanced on its own, which is the distinction between a caller and a flyer GMT.
Calidad de construcción
Identical construction to the SRPD: screw-down crown, 100 m rating, brushed and polished steel. The bezel here is fixed rather than rotating, which suits the complication and removes a common point of wear.
Esfera
A black dial with LumiBrite-filled applied markers, a date at three, and a printed 24-hour track that has to coexist with the main minute track. It is busier than the standard Seiko 5. The two-tone black and grey bezel keeps the day and night halves readable at a glance, which is the whole point of the 24-hour scale.
Brazalete y correa
The five-link jubilee-style bracelet is more comfortable and better looking than the three-link fitted to the SRPD, but the end links are still folded and the clasp is stamped with three adjustment positions.
Comodidad y ergonomía
Lug-to-lug is unchanged at 46 mm. The additional 0.2 mm of case height over the SRPD is negligible; the difference on the wrist comes from the jubilee bracelet, which distributes 155 g more evenly than a three-link.
Precisión
Seiko publishes the same -35/+45 seconds per day for the 4R34 as for the rest of the family. The GMT hand is driven from the same gear train, so it stays synchronised with the main display.
Lo que nos gusta
Lo que nos gusta
- A genuine mechanical 24-hour GMT complication under $450
- Built on the proven SRPD case with a screw-down crown
- Day-and-night bezel insert reads clearly at a glance
- Jubilee-style bracelet is more comfortable than the standard three-link
Lo que no nos gusta
- A caller GMT: the local hour hand cannot be jumped independently
- The thickest watch in the Seiko 5 line at 13.6 mm
- Hardlex crystal on a $425 watch
¿Quién debería comprarlo?
Anyone with family or colleagues in another time zone, and anyone who wants a mechanical complication without leaving the sub-$500 bracket.
¿Quién debería descartarlo?
Skip it if you land in a new time zone most weeks — a flyer GMT removes real friction. Skip it if 13.6 mm is more than your cuffs allow.

Veredicto final
As a piece of value engineering the SSK001 is remarkable, and as a travel watch it does what most people actually need. The compromise is the caller mechanism, and the honest test is whether you reset your watch on landing or simply want to know what time it is at home.

Preguntas frecuentes
What is the difference between a caller and a flyer GMT?
On a caller GMT the 24-hour hand is adjusted and the local hands are left alone, which suits tracking home time. On a flyer GMT the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps so it can be reset on arrival without stopping the watch. The SSK001 is a caller.
Can the bezel track a third time zone?
Not on the SSK001 — the 24-hour bezel is fixed rather than rotating, so a third zone has to be calculated mentally from the GMT hand.
