On specification, the SRPD55 is the cheapest route to a mechanical watch that does not read as a compromise: a hacking, hand-winding automatic, 100 m of water resistance and a case that carries the SKX silhouette. Diseño
The SRPD case descends from the SKX007 with the crown guards removed and a slimmer bezel fitted. That shifts it away from a full diver and towards a general sports watch, which is why it reads as more versatile than its 100 m rating implies. Seiko fits applied indices and a day-date aperture at three across the line.
Movimiento
The 4R36 runs at 21,600 vph with 24 jewels, adds hacking seconds and manual winding over the older 7S26, and stores 41 hours. Seiko publishes an accuracy window of -35 to +45 seconds per day, the widest of any movement in this price bracket. It is regulated easily by any watchmaker and parts supply is effectively unlimited.
Calidad de construcción
The case combines brushed upper surfaces with polished flanks, a screw-down crown and a solid steel caseback on most references. The 120-click unidirectional bezel is standard across the line. Seiko does not certify the SRPD to ISO 6425, and it carries no DIVER'S marking — the 100 m rating covers swimming and snorkelling rather than scuba.
Esfera
Applied indices are the notable inclusion at this price; most competitors print them. The day-date window sits at three o'clock and the handset is Seiko's familiar sword set with LumiBrite fill, which the brand rates among the strongest luminous compounds in its catalogue.
Brazalete y correa
The three-link bracelet uses folded end links and a stamped clasp with three micro-adjustment holes. It is the clearest cost saving on the watch. The 22 mm lug width means a solid-link replacement or a leather strap costs little and changes the character of the piece substantially.
Comodidad y ergonomía
The 42.5 mm diameter overstates how the watch sits: lug-to-lug is 46 mm, which is shorter than many 40 mm watches. The limiting figure is 13.4 mm of thickness, which is what makes it awkward under a fitted cuff rather than the diameter.
Precisión
Seiko rates the 4R36 at -35 to +45 seconds per day. In practice the caliber is widely regulated closer to its centre by watchmakers for around $60, which is worth budgeting if you want a mechanical watch to keep time within ten seconds a day.

The SRPD55 remains the default recommendation at its price because of what it includes rather than what it does exceptionally. It is not the most accurate, best-finished or best-specified automatic under $250 — but it is the one with the fewest reasons not to buy it.
