Veredicto rápido

The Cocktail Time exists to do one thing extremely well: look considerably more expensive than it is. A pressed sunburst dial, a box crystal and a dauphine handset are specifications normally found several hundred dollars higher. The price is paid in water resistance and in a strap most owners replace.

Diseño

The dial is stamped with a radial pattern before lacquering, so the sunburst is a physical texture rather than a printed effect. The box-shaped crystal rises above the bezel and refracts the outer minute track when viewed off-axis — a vintage cue that is expensive to produce and rare below $1,000.

Movimiento

The 4R35 is the 4R36 without the day complication: 21,600 vph, 24 jewels, hacking, hand-winding, 41 hours. It is the least remarkable part of the watch. Seiko's published accuracy is the same -35/+45 seconds per day as the rest of the 4R family.

Calidad de construcción

A mirror-polished bezel meets brushed case flanks with a defined transition, and an exhibition caseback displays the movement. The crown is push-pull rather than screw-down, which is the direct reason for the 50 m rating and the main functional limitation of the watch.

Esfera

The reason to buy this watch. In the blue SRPB43 the sunburst moves from deep navy to a much brighter blue as the angle changes. Markers are applied and faceted, printing is fine, and the date window is colour-matched on most references.

Brazalete y correa

The supplied calfskin is thin and finished with a folding clasp that does not match the quality of the case. Lug width is a conventional 20 mm, so replacements are inexpensive and plentiful; a padded leather or a Milanese mesh both suit the dial.

Comodidad y ergonomía

At 11.8 mm and 82 g on leather this is the slimmest and lightest watch in Seiko's mainstream mechanical range. The one dimension to check is the 47.9 mm lug-to-lug, which is long for the case diameter and will overhang wrists under about 6.25 inches.

Precisión

Seiko rates the 4R35 identically to the 4R36. As with all 4R movements, timekeeping degrades in the final hours of the 41-hour reserve as amplitude falls, so a watch worn occasionally benefits from being wound fully before an event.

Lo que nos gusta

Lo que nos gusta

  • Pressed sunburst dial rather than a printed one
  • Box-shaped crystal, a detail normally reserved for far pricier watches
  • 11.8 mm case height fits under a shirt cuff
  • Applied faceted markers with a dauphine handset

Lo que no nos gusta

  • 50 m water resistance and a push-pull crown — not a swimming watch
  • The supplied leather strap is the weakest component
  • 47.9 mm lug-to-lug is long relative to the 40.5 mm case

¿Quién debería comprarlo?

Anyone who needs a single watch that works with a suit, and anyone who values how a dial handles light more than how deep a case is rated.

¿Quién debería descartarlo?

Skip it if the watch will be worn swimming or in the shower — 50 m with a push-pull crown is not enough. Skip it if you want a bracelet included.

Veredicto final

Judged on dial execution alone, nothing under $500 competes. Judged as a watch you wear every day in every situation, the 50 m rating is a genuine constraint. Buy it as a dress watch and it is close to unbeatable.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can the Cocktail Time be worn swimming?

No. 50 m with a push-pull crown is specified for rain and hand-washing. Repeated swimming risks moisture passing the crown seal.

Is the crystal sapphire?

No. It is box-shaped Hardlex with an anti-reflective coating applied to the underside. Sapphire box crystals exist as aftermarket parts but are costly because of the shape.

Which dial colour is the most versatile?

The blue SRPB43 is the signature reference. The silver SRPB47 is the most subtle for daily wear and the champagne SRPB46 is the warmest and most formal.
