Veredicto rápido
The Lunar Pilot is the most interesting chronograph under $800 and the least wearable watch in this database. Bulova's 262 kHz quartz gives it a smooth sweeping chronograph hand and precision no mechanical chronograph at the price can match — but 53 mm across the lugs is a hard limit.

Diseño
A close reissue of the 1971 Apollo 15 chronograph, with a tachymeter bezel, three subdials and a broad handset. The proportions are historically faithful and enormous by modern standards.
Movimiento
The NP20 high-performance quartz oscillates at 262 kHz — roughly eight times the frequency of a standard quartz crystal. The practical result is a chronograph seconds hand that sweeps smoothly rather than ticking, and timing resolution far beyond a mechanical chronograph.
Calidad de construcción
A 316L steel case with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a push-pull crown, rated to 50 m. Construction is solid; the water resistance is the specification most at odds with the watch's appearance.
Esfera
A black dial running six hands across three subdials, with a tachymeter scale, applied luminous markers and a calendar aperture. It is a busy dial, faithful to the original, and legible once you learn where things are.
Brazalete y correa
Two straps in the box: black textured leather on a pin buckle, and a black nylon strap whose nubuck patch is stamped DOM 08021971 — the date Apollo 15 landed. Both are 20 mm, and a 20 mm strap on a 45 mm case looks narrow, which is part of the period-correct proportions.
Comodidad y ergonomía
The limiting figure is 53 mm lug-to-lug, longer than anything else in this database by 3 mm. Bulova publishes the 45 mm diameter and the 20 mm lug width but not this figure, so treat it as a specialist-press number rather than a manufacturer one. This watch needs a wrist of about 7.25 inches to sit correctly, and it will overhang below that.
Precisión
High-frequency quartz movements of this class are specified far more tightly than standard quartz. Confirm the exact figure with Bulova for the reference you are buying.
Lo que nos gusta
Lo que nos gusta
- A high-frequency quartz movement with a smooth-sweeping chronograph hand
- Sapphire crystal and a genuine 1/1000th-second chronograph capability
- Direct lineage to a watch worn on the Moon
- Considerably cheaper than any mechanical chronograph of comparable presence
Lo que no nos gusta
- 53 mm lug-to-lug — the largest footprint in this database
- 50 m water resistance despite the tool-watch styling
- Quartz, which for a chronograph at this price divides opinion
¿Quién debería comprarlo?
Anyone with a larger wrist who wants a chronograph with real history, and anyone who values chronograph precision over mechanical romance.
¿Quién debería descartarlo?
Skip it if your wrist is under 7 inches. Skip it if a quartz chronograph at $600 feels wrong to you — that is a legitimate objection.

Veredicto final
One of the few watches in this price range with a genuine story and an unusual movement to back it up. The size is not a matter of taste; measure your wrist first.

Preguntas frecuentes
Was this watch really worn on the Moon?
A Bulova chronograph was worn by David Scott during Apollo 15 in 1971 after his issued watch failed. The modern Lunar Pilot is a reissue of that design, not the original watch.
What does 262 kHz quartz mean in practice?
A standard quartz crystal oscillates at 32,768 Hz. Bulova's runs at 262 kHz, which allows a smoother chronograph sweep and finer timing resolution.
