The Best Watches Under $50

Under $50 you are not buying a compromise, you are buying a different category. A $30 digital Casio keeps time to ±30 seconds a month — an order of magnitude tighter than any mechanical watch on this site, including the ones costing thirty times more. What you give up is material, not accuracy. The honest shape of this list is that one company owns this price. Every watch below is a Casio, and we have not padded the list with other brands to make it look broader than the market is.

Best overall

Casio F-105W

The F-91W with its one real flaw fixed, at the same $29.95. Where the F-91W lights one corner of its display with a small LED, the F-105W has an electro-luminescent panel behind the whole thing — that is what ILLUMINATOR on the dial means. Same module, same ±30 seconds a month, same seven-year CR2016, same 21 grams.

The compromise

1.1 mm thicker than the F-91W, and Casio publishes no depth rating for it — only WATER RESIST, which covers rain and hand-washing.

Best for travel, and the only one you can swim in

Casio AE-1200WH

The one watch here with a depth rating Casio actually publishes: 100 m. Add 31 time zones, four simultaneous Multi Time displays, five alarms and a battery Casio rates at ten years on a CR2025, and $39.95 stops looking like a price and starts looking like an error.

The compromise

45 mm lug-to-lug and 12.5 mm thick — this is a genuinely large watch, and the world map printed on the display is decoration, not a zone indicator.

Best on a small wrist

Casio A158WA

36.8 mm from end to end and 8.2 mm thick — the smallest footprint in our entire database, cheaper watches and $1,000 watches alike. The chrome-plated case and steel bracelet also make it the only one here that passes in an office, and its green LED lights the display better than the F-91W's lamp.

The compromise

46 g against the F-91W's 21, most of it bracelet, and the folded links feel like what they cost. No published depth rating either.

Best featherweight, and the default

Casio F-91W

21 grams and 8.5 mm. There is no watch on this site you notice less, and the shape has not changed since 1989 — which is why it is the one everybody pictures. Seven years on a CR2016 makes it genuinely maintenance-free, and it is the watch to hand a child.

The compromise

The light. For the same $29.95 the F-105W lights the whole display instead of one corner, and that is the only reason to hesitate.

How we chose

Three bars, and at this price most watches fail all three. The manufacturer has to publish an accuracy figure. The manufacturer has to publish a battery interval. And a watch only gets called water-resistant here if its maker states a depth — Casio prints WATER RESIST on cases it publishes no depth rating for, and we do not turn that phrase into a number. Every watch below is a record we built from Casio's own product pages, with a review of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a $30 watch any good?

For telling the time, better than almost anything above it. Casio publishes ±30 seconds a month for these modules; a good mechanical watch is specified at ±30 seconds a day. What $30 does not buy you is a sapphire crystal, a steel case or a movement anyone wants to look at.

Can you swim with a Casio F-91W?

No. Casio publishes no depth rating for the F-91W, the F-105W or the A158WA — the case says WATER RESIST and the specification sheet says nothing more, which covers rain and hand-washing. The AE-1200WH is the cheapest watch in our database with a published rating, at 100 m.

Why is every watch on this list a Casio?

Because under $50 no other brand in our database publishes an accuracy figure, a battery interval and a case specification we can check against the manufacturer. We would rather run a four-watch list that is true than a ten-watch list that is padded.
