Veredicto rápido
The Khaki Field Mechanical is the most focused watch in this database. No date, no automatic rotor, no bracelet — a 38 mm hand-wound field watch with sapphire, 9.5 mm of height and an 80-hour reserve. Everything Hamilton removed is the reason it works.

Diseño
A faithful reading of the mid-century military specification: matte dial, painted Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour track and a stubby knurled crown. There is no date window, which keeps the layout symmetrical and is a large part of why the dial reads so cleanly.
Movimiento
The H-50 is hand-wound, with an 80-hour reserve and a Nivachron balance spring — an anti-magnetic alloy Hamilton normally reserves for watches costing considerably more, and a genuine advantage for anyone who spends their day near a laptop. There is no rotor, which is the direct reason the case is only 9.5 mm tall.
Calidad de construcción
Fully brushed steel with a sapphire crystal and a push-pull crown, which caps water resistance at 50 m. The construction is simple by design; there is very little here to fail.
Esfera
Matte and deliberately non-reflective, with luminous fill on the numerals and hands. It is the most legible dial in this database in daylight and one of the plainest, which is the point.
Brazalete y correa
A green NATO textile strap on a 20 mm lug width. A single-pass NATO adds a millimetre or two of height on the wrist and is the period-correct choice for a field watch; a leather strap sits lower if you prefer it.
Comodidad y ergonomía
At 9.5 mm on a textile strap this is the easiest watch here to wear all day — Hamilton does not publish a weight, but a 38 mm steel case with no bracelet is about as light as a mechanical watch gets. The one figure to check is the 47 mm lug-to-lug, which is long for a 38 mm case and will overhang wrists below about 6.25 inches.
Precisión
Hamilton does not publish a rate specification for the H-50. What it does publish is the 80-hour reserve, which in a hand-wound watch means it survives a weekend in a drawer.
Lo que nos gusta
Lo que nos gusta
- 80-hour reserve from a hand-wound Swiss movement
- 9.5 mm case height, the thinnest watch in this database
- Sapphire crystal and a properly matte, non-reflective dial
- No date window, so the dial layout stays symmetrical
Lo que no nos gusta
- 50 m water resistance with a push-pull crown
- Hand-winding is a daily requirement, not an option
- 47 mm lug-to-lug is long relative to the 38 mm case
¿Quién debería comprarlo?
Anyone who wants a Swiss mechanical watch that disappears on the wrist, anyone with a smaller wrist, and anyone who actively enjoys winding a watch each morning.
¿Quién debería descartarlo?
Skip it if you will not remember to wind it, or if the watch has to go swimming. Skip it if you need a date.

Veredicto final
The best-executed field watch under $600 and the most comfortable watch in this database. It asks something of its owner every day, and that is either the appeal or the deal-breaker.

Preguntas frecuentes
How often does a hand-wound watch need winding?
Daily is the usual habit, though the H-50's 80-hour reserve means it will run for more than three days from a full wind.
Is there an automatic version?
Yes. The Khaki Field Automatic uses the H-10 caliber, adds a date and 100 m of water resistance, and is a little over a millimetre thicker.
